The following are the primary tasks of the Shadow Play Museum: educating both Taiwanese and foreign visitors about this important and beautiful culture heritage, holding performances, collecting valuable information on Taiwanese and to a lesser extent other forms of shadow plays as well as developing and producing both traditional and innovative shadow plays.

The following are the museum’s future vision and goals:

  • Continuing and preserving Taiwan’s native shadow play, strengthening guidance, assistance, and exchange activities for troupes, and maintaining and increasing its collection of Taiwanese shadowgraph cultural relics as well as other relevant puppet information.
  • Holding exchange activities with foreign shadow puppet troupes and working to make the museum a shadowgraph center with the most world’s most complete information and an attractive destination for both domestic and foreign tourists,
  • Carrying out in-depth research on the development and inheritance process of Taiwan’s shadow plays, developing current troupes’ proficiency, marketing, and management, and working to educate Taiwanese and foreigners about the cultural importance, skill and beauty of puppet plays. Reinvigorating the appeal of shadow plays to attract a new generation of attendees to performances with both traditional and innovative shows thereby helping Taiwanese citizens to learn about this part of their own native culture.
  • Teaching traditional shadow play techniques and cultivating school troupes in Kaohsiung City that spread throughout Taiwan and pass down this aspect of their country’s culture to the next generation of Taiwanese.
